Why iPad case selection matters more than Chromebook
- iPad screen replacements cost $180 to $320 vs $60 to $120 for a Chromebook.
- iPads have no integrated lid. Without a folio the glass is exposed every time it lands on a desk.
- iPad hinge replacements do not exist. A bent frame is a full chassis swap.
- iPad batteries are glued. Liquid intrusion is often a total loss.
- A $30 folio that prevents one screen replacement pays back six fold.
- Bundled with KBS Coverage, a case + coverage rollout typically cuts iPad repair spend 55 to 70 percent.
Spec checklist for any iPad case
MIL-STD-810G drop rating
Minimum 4 foot tested. Most school grade brands publish the test report.
Raised screen lip
At least 2mm above the glass. The single most important feature.
Port and button coverage
Flush button covers and recessed port cutouts cut liquid claims in half.
Apple Pencil retention
Holder, loop, or magnetic dock that matches the Pencil generation you deploy.
Asset tag window or transparent back
Saves hours on every inventory audit.
Repairable corners
Replaceable bumpers extend case life across two device refresh cycles.
Frequently asked questions
Which iPad cases survive K-12?+
Gumdrop DropTech, OtterBox UnlimitED, Brenthaven Edge Bounce, Logitech Rugged Folio, and STM Dux Shell consistently survive a full school year with under 5 percent case failure across our covered fleets.
Should we use a folio or a shell?+
Folios protect the screen during transport, which is where most iPad screen claims start. Shells are lighter but expose the glass. For K-8 the folio wins on claim math. High school can run shells if the fleet uses sleeves.
Will a case interfere with Apple Pencil?+
Most school grade cases now include a pencil holder or magnetic retention loop. Confirm the Pencil generation matches the case spec. First gen and USB-C Pencils have different geometries.
Do iPad cases work with our MDM?+
Yes. Cases are mechanical. They have no effect on Jamf, Mosyle, or Apple School Manager. The asset tag window on most school cases makes inventory audits faster.
Can the iPad still charge while in the case?+
Every school grade case has cutouts for Lightning, USB-C, or magnetic charging. Confirm the cutout matches the cable and adapter your district standardizes on.
