Do this tonight
- 1
Stop using a damaged charger immediately.
Frayed cables and clicking bricks are a fire risk. Unplug from the wall, not from the device end.
- 2
Take a photo of the damage.
Especially the cable damage and any burn marks on the brick. This protects you from being charged for 'misuse.'
- 3
Borrow a same-spec USB-C charger overnight.
If the device uses standard USB-C PD, any 45W or 65W USB-C laptop charger keeps your kid up and running for one night. Do NOT use a cheap phone brick long-term.
- 4
Email the school in the morning.
Subject: 'Charger replacement, asset tag #____ .' Ask whether your child is covered before paying any invoice.
Charger replacement cost by device

|---|---|---|
| HP / Lenovo Chromebook (USB-C 45W) | $25–$40 | Included |
| Dell Chromebook (USB-C 65W) | $35–$55 | Included |
| Acer / Asus Chromebook (barrel) | $30–$50 | Included |
| iPad 10th gen / Air (USB-C 20W) | $25–$39 | Included |
| MacBook Air (USB-C 30W) | $45–$59 | Included |
Mistakes to avoid
- Wrapping a frayed cable in electrical tape and sending it back to school.
- Buying the cheapest USB-C charger on Amazon and assuming the school will accept it as a replacement.
- Using a phone charger long-term. Most under-deliver wattage and damage the battery.
- Letting the kid pull the cable out by the cord instead of the plug. That is what frays it.
- Paying the charger fee before checking if your district has coverage that includes accessories.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a replacement school Chromebook charger cost?+
Most districts bill $25 to $45 for a replacement. A few schools charge up to $60 for premium USB-C bricks. KBS coverage includes chargers.
Can I just buy a charger off Amazon?+
Technically yes for USB-C Chromebooks, but the school will still mark the original as lost and bill you. Always check with the tech department first.
The cable is frayed. Is that on us?+
Most districts call frayed cables 'normal wear' if the device is under a year old. Older devices are usually billed as damage. Tape is never the answer, replace it.
What about the brick that overheats and clicks?+
Stop using it tonight. Overheating bricks are a fire risk and a known recall trigger for some Lenovo and HP models. Report it to the school for a free swap.
Does coverage really include chargers?+
Yes. KBS plans include the charger and cable as part of the covered device. Lose it, fry it, chew through it. One small per-claim fee.
