Chromebook Insurance for Parents: The 2026 Guide

Your student's school Chromebook lives in a backpack, goes through cafeterias, and ends up on the floor more than anyone wants to admit. Here is the honest parent guide to insuring it.

What is actually covered

Every plan is different, but most school device coverage looks like this.

Cracked screens

The most common claim by far. Front glass, LCD panel, and digitizer on touch models.

Liquid spills

Juice, water bottles, coffee, snow. As long as the damage is reported quickly, it is covered.

Battery and power failures

Swollen batteries, dead cells, and charging port damage after years of plug and unplug.

Keyboard and hinge damage

Popped keys, stuck keys, broken hinges, cracked palmrests. The wear and tear of a school year.

How to enroll your student's device

  1. 1

Find your school in our system.

Type your school name on the enroll page. If your school is already a KBS district, you can attach the device directly to your child's record.

  2. 2

    Pick a plan.

Most schools offer two or three tiers. Higher tiers usually lower the per-claim cost. Pick what fits your budget and the device your child carries.

  3. 3

    Pay for the school year.

School year coverage runs August through June. We do not bill you again in the summer because the device is on the shelf.

  4. 4

File a claim if anything happens.

Photo, short description, submit. A real human reviews and approves the claim, usually the same day. Repair starts immediately after.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Chromebook insurance cost for parents?+

School year coverage runs $20 to $50 per device. The exact price depends on the plan your school offers and the deductible per claim. KBS school year plans typically run $25 to $40 with a $0 to $25 per claim cost.

Does homeowners insurance cover a school Chromebook?+

Usually no. The device is owned by the school district, not the family, so most homeowners and renters policies will not cover it. Dedicated school device coverage is the right tool.

What is covered under Chromebook insurance?+

Accidental damage. Cracked screens, liquid spills, drops, broken hinges, keyboard damage, and most accidental impacts. Loss, theft, and intentional damage are usually excluded. Read your school's plan for specifics.

Is Chromebook insurance worth it?+

If your child uses a school Chromebook every day, almost always yes. The average parent-pay plan costs less than a single screen repair, and most families file at least one claim per school year.

Can I enroll mid school year?+

Yes. KBS coverage prorates the rest of the school year so parents joining in October or January pay less than parents who enrolled in August.

What happens if I do not enroll and my child breaks the device?+

You will be billed the full repair cost by the school. For touchscreens and convertibles that often runs $120 to $200 per claim. Many districts hold report cards or transcripts until the invoice is paid.

Enroll before the first claim

Coverage cannot apply to existing damage. The cheapest school year is the one you enroll in before your kid drops the lid the first time.

No claim limits. Average 4 day repair. Real humans review every claim.
