Do I Need Chromebook Insurance for My Kid? An Honest Answer

We run the largest school device repair lab in our region. We see the data every day. Here is the honest answer for whether your family needs coverage.

A 60 second decision

Get coverage if

  • Your child takes the device home daily.
  • You have a student in grades 4 through 9.
  • Your district charges $80 or more for a screen repair.
  • You have more than one student with a school device.
  • Your child has broken or lost a device in a previous year.
  • Your household budget cannot absorb a surprise $200+ invoice.

You can probably skip if

  • The device never leaves the school building.
  • Your district pays for all repairs at no cost to parents.
  • Your student has consistently shown extreme care with electronics.
  • Your district provides loaner devices for free with no claim cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is Chromebook insurance worth the money?+

For most 1:1 families, yes. The average plan costs less than a single screen repair, and most students file at least one claim per school year. Households with multiple kids or active kids see the biggest payoff.

What grade is most likely to break a Chromebook?+

Middle school is the peak. Elementary devices break less because they stay at school more. High school devices break less because students handle them more carefully. Grades 5 through 8 are the highest claim rate.

Should I get insurance if my school already gave my child a case?+

Yes. Cases reduce drop damage but do nothing for spills, hinge stress, or accidental impacts on a corner the case does not cover. Coverage and a case work together.

What if my kid never breaks anything?+

Then you spent $30 or $40 to remove the risk for the year. Most parents who skip coverage and get unlucky pay 3 to 5 times more in one repair bill than a whole year of coverage.

When is it safe to skip coverage?+

If the device stays at school the entire year, your child is extremely careful, and your district's repair fees are unusually low. That is rare.

If you said yes to any of the green column, enroll

The math is overwhelmingly in your favor. One claim almost always covers the whole school year cost.
