Liquid Damage on a School Chromebook: The Parent Repair Guide

Liquid damage is the second most common school Chromebook claim behind cracked screens. What you do in the first 10 minutes decides whether you pay $90 or $400.

The first 10 minutes

  1. 1

    Power it off immediately.

Hold the power button. Do not try to save the work on the screen. Every second a wet Chromebook stays powered, more components short.

  2. 2

    Unplug everything.

Charger, mouse, headphones, USB. Anything that creates a circuit needs to come out.

  3. 3

Open it and turn it upside down on a towel.

Form a tent shape. Let gravity pull the liquid back out the same way it came in.

  4. 4

Do not try to dry it with a hair dryer.

Heat pushes residue deeper into the board. A towel and gravity are the right tools.

  5. 5

    Skip the rice.

It is a myth. It cannot pull liquid out of an internal corrosion zone. Get the device to a technician instead.

  6. 6

Report it to the school the same day.

A claim filed the day of the spill is almost always honored. A device that 'still worked' for a week before failing is harder to file on.

Liquid damage cost by severity

SeverityWhat was hitOut of pocketWith KBS coverage
Light splashKeyboard only$90–$130$0–$25
Moderate spillKeyboard + trackpad$130–$200$0–$25
Heavy spillMotherboard short$200–$350$0–$25
Sweet liquid (juice, soda)Sticky corrosion across board$250–$400$0–$25

Sweet and acidic liquids are the worst. Sugar accelerates corrosion and almost always reaches the board.

Cap your liquid damage exposure for the school year

One enrollment covers cracked screens, drops, and spills. Same flat per claim cost no matter what got knocked over.

What makes liquid damage worse

  • Trying to turn it on to 'see if it still works.'
  • Putting it in rice or any sealed bag.
  • Using a hair dryer or oven to dry it.
  • Wiping the spill and putting the device back in the bag still wet.
  • Waiting a week to report it because it 'seems fine.'
  • Charging it before a technician opens it up.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Chromebook be saved after a liquid spill?+

Often yes, if you power it down immediately and do not try to use it. The faster the device gets to a technician, the cheaper the repair. Waiting 24 hours dramatically increases the chance of motherboard corrosion.

Does rice work for a wet Chromebook?+

No. Rice is a myth. The right move is to power down, drain the liquid, and get it to a technician. Rice cannot pull liquid out of an internal corrosion zone.

What does liquid damage repair cost?+

Depending on severity, $90 to $400 out of pocket. A light keyboard spill is on the low end. A full motherboard replacement is on the high end. KBS school year coverage caps the parent cost at $0 to $25 per claim.

Is water damage covered by Chromebook insurance?+

Yes, under accidental damage coverage. KBS plans cover liquid spills as one of the most common claim types, alongside cracked screens.

What if my child spilled liquid and the Chromebook still works?+

Report it anyway. Liquid corrosion can take days or weeks to surface. A device that boots today can fail next Tuesday. A claim filed the day of the spill is almost always honored.

Don't pay $300 for a $5 water bottle

Enroll your student's Chromebook today so the next juice cup, snow boot, or coffee spill costs you almost nothing.
